Held just about 3.45s for the first set. May be 3.52s for
the second but the third was ugly in high 3.59s. I was absolutely cooked as
they say in cycling.
I came home absolutely drenched. Quick shower then
straight out the door to Grand Street subway but no train (weekend works) so
took the up town bus instead. Had to bite my lip all day not to moan about
being tired.
At Times Square we bought the Big Bus tickets and managed to
haggle to get 3 days worth for 2 and only paid for 4 people.
We did the uptown loop which goes around the upper west side
of Central Park past where all the 'new money' lives. Harlem is always a
highlight for me and remember buying the crap out of the street stores back in
94. I remember buying this iconic Mandela shirt which I wore proudly for the
rest of the holiday (he'd been released from prison 2 years prior).
The weather changed at this point thank god with the rain
which coincided with our Guggenheim stop. Took loads of photos of Picasso,
Monet, Kandinsky, Van Gough, Jackson Pollock, Paul Klee. This place is the
nuts. Tommy and Lucas love their art and this was a pretty cool experience.
A quick lunch and then the open top Big Bus back on the
upper east side back down to Times Square.
Earlier I had spied this 'running' shop and negotiated with
J to have a 10 min look ahead of the next bus. Immediately I spied the Nike
zoom Fly so asked the guy if they had the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% (literally
released 3 days ago). I've been asking around since we got here and even Nike Town
was not stocking them. By a shear fluke, of the 2 sizes remaining one was in my
size and so took the immediate plunge by spending the $2xx. The deal clincher
was that they are extremely rare and could sell on eBay for 300+. Result and
they feel magic albeit for only the 10 meters of running in the shop.
We then Big Bus'd it back down to Soho and China Town before
a quick shower and walk to East Village to eat at Gyu- Kaku (34 Cooper Square)
which Susan B in the NY office had recommended. It's a Japanese grill place
with each table having their own grill in the middle. They kept coming with
more renditions of meat, fish and veggies. It finished off with marsh mellows
which we grilled to then be wedged into biscuits with Hershey chocolate. The
boys then proclaimed it was by far and away the best restaurant they had ever
been to!
