Saintes to San Sébastian (for the annual Semana Grande festival)

Woke up this morning for the daily croissant test wich ranked the Saintes bakery a 7 out of 10. Abbeville Boulangerie is still leading the way with an outstanding 8.5.

We then headed down to San Sébastian in northern Spain (Basque country) but only after a late start and hit serious traffic in Bordeaux. Not ideal with 4 restless boys in the back and me being the worst behaved of all. I hate traffic, such a complete waste of time! We ended up playing MARE by Black Eyed Peas a 100 times over, one of the boys' favs.

SanS has a beautiful beach, old town and excuisite food (it has a rediculous # of Michelin* restaurants). We are also here for Semana Grande (San S's big week!). It is the biggest outdoor piss up I have seen. There are dance floors, bands playing, traditional Basque dancing in amazing arenas / squares, large pupateers walking along hitting all the passersby on the cramped medieval streets with balloons (go figure?) and a load more. It is quite something with the young Basque kids running riot and at one point dualling Lucas. It also has one of the world's best fireworks displays and for every night of the week long festival (Aug 8-15). Thoroughly recommend. They use to have the running of the bulls in the old town here too but ditched and has been around since 1850 odd.

Jacqueline and I have been before ex kids and always said we'd love to show the boys one day with the festival being a added bonus. It's a gem with no English riff raff like you get in other parts of Spain.

We basically spent the arvo on the beach and then back to the place where we are staying right in the middle of the old town. In the evening we ate at a load of Tapas bars (lots of octapus and green chillies) and watched the 10.45pm fireworks on the beach with Ryder balling his eyes out - he is tough as guts with 3 big bros but fireworks just sets him off! Jacqui did good with the location and hotel find, has to be said!

Will make sure I get my run in in the morning which will be country #3 out of #9 in the next 6 weeks. Largely due to work commitments, summer hols and Jack footie I am due to be in 9 countries and 3 continents: UK, France, Spain, Australia, NZ, Luxembourg, Holland, USA and Germany. Bar the holidays I cannot say am looking forward to it.
