St Jean De Luz

Dehydrated (code for hungover) this morning but jogged the coastal path to meet the family on the beach but cut it short to 40 minutes. Hot and bothered and managed to get bitten on my left hammie to boot whilst running through the headland bush - I saw it jump off whatever it was and has been painful ever since.

A hot day in Basque land and spent the standard 5 hours on the beach, in fact too much sun today.

The boys had to trek a kilometer northwards to find any waves. Lukie ditched his tiny fibre glass today for the foamie and he had a ball with gentle waves carrying him 40 meters + to shore.

Tonight we headed into the very pretty town of St Jean De Luz for dinner to meet Eniela and family again. Another absokute hidden treasure. This is where Monsieur Lacoste is from and perhaps more importantly Luis the 14th. It's a magic town with a picturesque beach harbour coupled with plentiful medieval street ways. Again no English to be seen or heard!

After drinks in the square Eniela took us to this open air garage which has been transformed into a dozen eateries (mainly seafod) and bars plus a skate half pipe which the boys were engrossed with (the place was called 'Renault'). There we ate the best mussels to date (even trumping the Biarritz port ones) and oysters. The jambon Bayonne was also to die for.

It was gone 11.30pm before we marched all the kids out for ice cream. I swear to god I tasted the best ice cream known to man today, cherry chocolate and macorone (I don't even like cherry but it's a Basque speciality). Unbelievable.

Another intoxicating day in another Franco Spanish town in Basque country (this may have been the best yet). A massive thanks to Eniela for showing us around the last few days, nothing beats being shown around by a local!

* I see that Seb Coe has been appointed the new Athletics chief - if his politics are anything to go by then his appointment does not fill me with a great deal of optimism.
